If you would like to take the scenic route to Fes this is a good place to stop on the way. The drive from Tangier, via Tetouan, takes just over 2 hours. The small picturesque Spanish style town of Chaouen, as it is called locally, is named after the two surrounding peaks and lies on the edge of the Rif Mountains. Chaouen is famous for its blue-tinted whitewash walls, which give off an extraordinary glow, and for its status as one of the last towns in Morocco to fall to the Spanish in 1920.
Casa Hassan is located just off the main square of the Medina. It has seven newly refurbished suites, decorated with traditional craft work, some have their own fireplace. Casa Hassan has a very good Moroccan restaurant--the Tissemlal--with a lovely terrace and great views. Please note that Casa Hassan does not serve alcohol..
